UK Pension Calculator: When Can I Retire?

How much will I have, and when can I stop working?

Use our free pension calculator to see what your pensions could grow to, the income they might pay and when you could retire.

What this calculator does

What This Calculator Does

This calculator answers 2 important questions:

  • How much could I have? See what your pension savings could grow to by the age you want to stop working.
  • When could I retire? See the earliest age your pensions could pay the income you want, or if they can at all.

Use it to get a feel for the numbers before you speak to an Adviser. It’s a starting point, not a plan.

What It Can’t Tell You

  • Whether that amount is enough for the life you want
  • Whether your money is invested in the right place for you
  • What happens if you need some of it sooner than planned

What It Assumes

  • Growth of 3%, 4% or 5% a year, depending on the risk level you choose. These are illustrations, not forecasts, and are not guaranteed.
  • Inflation of 2% a year, applied only when you choose to see figures in today’s money.
  • That you keep paying in the same amount until you stop working, and that no tax is taken into account.

How to Use Our Pension Calculator

It takes about a minute, and you won’t need any paperwork in front of you.

  1. Put in what you have

Add a lump sum, a monthly amount, or both. Rough figures are fine, and you can change them as you go.

  2. Choose how long and how much risk

Tell us when you’d like to stop working and how your pensions are invested. Pick the option that sounds most like you.

  3. See the range

You get a low and a high estimate rather than one figure, because nobody can tell you the exact number.

    FAQs

    Pension Calculator Questions

What should you do after getting your results from our pension calculator?

Compare the figure with the retirement you want. If there’s a gap, a free review with the Reeves Team can help you weigh up which option suits you.

When can I retire and take my pension?

You can usually take money from a private or workplace pension from age 55, rising to 57 from 6 April 2028. Your State Pension starts at State Pension age, which is 66 and rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028.

How much do I need in my pension pot to retire?

It depends on the lifestyle you want and any other income you’ll have, such as the State Pension. Start with what you spend now and think about what will change. Our calculator then shows how close your pension pot gets you.

How much of my pension can I take tax-free?

You can normally take up to 25% of your pension tax-free, up to a limit of £268,275 for most people. The rest is taxed as income when you take it. Our calculator does not take tax off the figures it shows.

How accurate is a pension calculator?

It gives an estimate, not a promise. Results depend on growth, charges and inflation, and nobody can predict those. That’s why we show a low and a high figure. For a plan based on your full circumstances, speak to an adviser.

Which pension calculator should you use?

We recommend ours, as it answers the two questions most people have: how much could I have, and when could I retire? The one we would recommend trying alongside ours is MoneyHelper’s pension calculator, which forecasts the likely pension income you’ll get when you retire.
