Proposed Changes to Your Portfolio:

In Brief...

Over the month of October, we have been conscious of your portfolio’s performance in this delicate global market. We are utilising our resources constantly to analyse the current market, so that we can implement the right strategies. The markets have shown some heightened volatility in the past few months and this has been reflected somewhat in our model portfolios.

In the first half of 2019, the markets rallied and although we had been defensively positioned, all portfolios achieved substantial growth. Moving into Quarter 3, we were more defensively positioned. As the FTSE All Share fell 6.97%, our Adventurous portfolios fell 1.54%. This shows the level of market volatility we have removed from our portfolios. Of course, the quid pro quo in reducing this volatility means that upside participation was somewhat constrained.

Furthermore, October is traditionally the most volatile month of the year. So, we have prepared for headwinds, as reflected in our confidence barometer which is reviewed monthly at our Investment Committee meetings. Our level of confidence was also reinforced recently at a professional investment seminar that the investment team were invited to, where the overall message was that there are numerous underlying tensions in the market currently and very careful analysis of market movements is needed.
