Reeves Independent Football Club

Reeves Independent Football Club - Details

About the players

This team is fairly unusual in that, Unlike most Sunday football clubs there is no real connection between players. There are no cliques. The one common thing is that they all enjoy their Sunday morning game of football.

Our players range in age from 19 to 45 years of age although most players are early twenties. All players live within 10 miles of Newcastle upon Tyne ranging from whitley bay in the east to Prudhoe in to the west. Virtually all the players played at least school team level with a number playing county football. The team has a healthy mix of local lads and a good number of adopted geordies that are graduates from the local universities.

History

The team originated from a team of local medics called The Victorians. They later became known as the old Vics to their opponents due to the ageing nature of the team. A Sunderland dentist, called Mike Hill had single handedly organised the team for about 5 years before hanging up his boots and handed the management of the team to Nigel Reeves in 1998. Since this time the team and club has changed its focus and composition.

Its activities

The club plays in Division 2 of the Tyneside Sunday morning league and has entered the Northumberland County Cup for the first time this year. The league is made up of business and pub teams including the world leader Sage and local bus company Go Gateshead. Teams come from all over Tyneside.

West gate community college host the 5 a side league that we also play in. This provides a useful work out for some players and an opportunity to assess new players.

As part of the pre season preparation the club took a squad for a game in Edinburgh in 2002 and this year we are going to York for another game against unknown opposition who have agreed to host our game.

This year the annual end of season dinner takes place on the evening of the final game of the season. Win or loss a pint or two is now enjoyed at the corner house, high heaton after most home games.

The club has been financed for the past few years by sole sponsorship by Reeves Independent and players match fees. As part of the campaign to move the club forward new Fund raising initiatives are being introduced including premiership scores competition, player sponsorship opportunities for business contacts and other fund raising opportunities.
